East Newfoundland / Orphan Basin

The East Newfoundland/Orphan Basin is currently in the spotlight with the 2003 call for bid No. NF03-1 closing on December 17, 2003.  The cumulative area up for bid covers 31,674 square kilometers.

TGS-NOPEC offers new long offset pre-stack time migrated data over this prospective area.  The Orphan Basin is bounded to the west by the Bonavista Platform, to the east by the ocean continent boundary, to the north by the Charlie Gibbs Fracture Zone and to the south by the Cumberland Magnetic Belt. This is an area of approximately 150,000 square kilometers with interpreted Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments reaching a thickness of over ten kilometers.

The line of the month shows the thick Tertiary section that overlays the bright Upper Cretateous marker.  Below the Upper Cretateous marker are the faulted Lower Cretateous, Jurassic, and Carboniferous.  The zoomed section highlights the Jurassic and Carboniferous structures that traditional have been tough to image but are interpretable with this new data.
