Offshore Liberia is a vast unexplored region covering more than 100,000 km² - to water depths of 4,000 m. There were only 7 exploration wells drilled offshore from 1970 to 1985. All wells were drilled on the shelf & upper slope, in water depths of 100 m. to 470 m – shoreward of migration access. Oil shows were encountered in 6 wells
TGS-NOPEC acquired approximately 9,400 km of 2D seismic data (including gravity and magnetic data) in the offshore area of Liberia. Integration of well data and TGS-NOPEC seismic data established the presence of the essential petroleum factors:
- Multiple oil prone source beds
- Abundant reservoir quality sandstones
- Adequate seals
- Varied abundant and large trap types
- Hydrocarbon generation and expulsion post trap formation
These factors are very similar to those of adjacent Côte d’Ivoire and other producing sectors of offshore West Africa. In summary, it would be expected that effective petroleum systems occur in the offshore Liberia basins.
The “Line of the Month” illustrates one of the many trap types in the area enhanced by a possible flat-spot.
